Important to note: Just because it is green, doesn’t mean it is a health food.

You know eating your daily dose of vegetables is  important. You do know that, right? Well, if you don’t, you do now. Leafy greens should be a staple in your diet, yet somehow knowing it and incorporating it are two very different things.

You can easily incorporate greens without any sautéing, seasoning, boiling, or even turning on an oven. Say what? Yes, eating your greens can be made even more manageable by consuming via a smoothie.

Green juices and smoothies seem to be everywhere you turn these days, but it is important to note, just because it is green, doesn’t mean it is a health food. Things to be aware of and look out for when purchasing green smoothies and juices off the shelf: serving size, added sugars, and fruit in general, as too much fruit can send the sugar content through the roof.


Here is an ideal low-sugar smoothie and a perfect accessory for your St. Patrick’s Day green:


Protein powder (Check the label for serving size, sugar, and ingredient contents.) Ideally, your protein powder will be low in sugar but high in protein and fiber. My favorite is USANA protein powder, as it is low-glycemic, high protein and fiber, and tastes delicious.)

1/2 avocado

1 cup spinach

fresh mint (or dash of peppermint oil)

1 tsp  cacao powder or cocoa powder (avoid Dutch cocoa and alkalized cocoa, as that is processed and void of the essential nutrients and antioxidants)

1 tbsp raw cacao nibs

1/2 banana

2 frozen dates (pitted)*

ice and water**

*Omit dates if you are looking to lower the sugar content even more

**Water can be substituted with nut milk or other milk alternative

Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender and enjoy!

This smoothie is meant to be a meal replacement, so when you are rushing out the door in the morning and don’t have time to sit down to breakfast, this can be your meal-on-the-go. This is also a great way to get antioxidant rich nutrients and greens into your kiddos without any battles.
