Are you addicted to tan? I was, but have been in recovery for the last 10 years.
But I still jones for that just-off-the-beach glow. Fortunately we have options in sunless tanning, and gone are the days of the alien orange of QT tanning lotion. It’s likely that the very first self-tanner ever on the market did not match any known actual color of any known human! But, oh, how things have changed.
The technology for self-tanning products continues to improve, and sunless tanning products are now available in many formulations—creams, oils, sprays, and gels. Some offer dark tans and others a gradual building of color. If you’re new to this I suggest the gradual option for your virgin voyage into faking it.
Here are some options (prices may vary):
Hampton Sun Sunless tanning gel, $34
Gels are great when you’re in a hurry because they dry fast. The inevitable streaks are easy to blend in.

Whish Self Tanner Body Butter, $30
This formulation contains mango and Arabica bean, and it softens, exfoliates, and tans. Win, win, win!
Vita Liberata Luxury Tan, $30
This mousse formulation is light and works well for oily skin.

Paula’s Choice Sun 365 Self Tanning Concentrate, $18; Tarte Maracuja Bronzing Serum, $47
These are concentrated DHA drops that you can add to your face moisturizer or body lotion.

Lorac Tantalizer Body Bronzing Spray, $15
Sprays are helpful for the hard to reach areas, and I like them if you’re up for a second coat because you do not need to touch or rub your skin and disrupt the previous application.
St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil, $50
Smells great, makes skin look luminous upon application, and because it’s oil-based, I feel like my tan lasts a little longer.

General tips about self-tanning:
The tan is fake, yes, but we don’t want it to scream, “This is a fake bake!”
- Exfoliate and shave before applying, for an even application
- Apply a moisturizer to palms of hands before application to prevent staining
- A bit of moisturizer on the nails and toenails will also stop the tanner from grabbing onto cuticles
- Ankles, knees, and elbows need extra smoothing
- Start light and build
- Best to stand in front of a well-lit mirror
- Allow sufficient time to dry
- Always follow directions on package
Happy tanning, all you Bronze Goddesses out there in Tanville!
