I woke this morning still a single mother artist. No man in the picture. No time card.  All hustle and word of mouth to keep the ship running. A conscious decision I made when my son was born so that I can be a very present, very hands on mom. This also affords me the freedom to make art and start my own business; all of which is in accord with who I am and what my mission is. But with this choice, comes great anxiety, and at times financial struggle.

This morning I’m falling apart, as I can do when faced with the limitation of my abilities, the reality that I CAN’T do it all, all the time. My fleshy (real) self doesn’t always match the Mary Poppins, Frida Kahlo, Martha Stewart, Maya Angelou, my “handling it all”  self, that resides in my head.  UGH so FRUSTRATING! Funny, at times, when faced with these moments, I’ll want to  turn to my partner, friends, my family shoot even my child for compassion. Why are we harder on ourselves in  these moments? Why don’t we gives ourselves compassion and balance? When I don’t take time to listen to my body the overwhelm begins, I suffer, my family suffers.

Here eenlies the discipline. STOPPING. Stop, when the heart starts to do that fluttering thing, when my breath shortens, and the Hitler version of me marches in my brain.  Any one of these is a sign to completely HALT everything. It’s time to just sit for a moment or two, and refill.

Let’s reinvent what it is to be a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur, an artist, a woman. No longer push, push, push but instead, ASSIST with balance, grace, acceptance and care for our limitations…and in that, be even more productive. That’s  IMPACT.

”Why are we harder on ourselves in these moments? Why don’t we gives ourselves compassion and balance? When I don’t take time to listen to my body the overwhelm begins, I suffer, my family suffers.”
